ICT (information and communication technology or technologies) this is an extended term for information technology. It is a vast term that include any communication device or application, encompassing: radio, television, cellular phones, computer hard ware’s and soft ware’s, satellites systems as well as various services and application associated with them.
Having defined the above key words, it is true that the globalization has brought about the advancement in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) which has made the world to be a “Global Village” in terms of connections for instance: – ICT has advanced to the grassroots levels all over the world which has increased the level of the participation and involvement of the community in the access and utilization of ICT regardless of education levels to both extends.
To a greater extend ICT (information and communication technology) increasing advancement in the use has led to the following:
New communication methods which is less expensive affordable by the community. ICT has opened up a wide range of new communication methods, allowing you to connect with others over greater distance than ever before. Technologies like texting, instant messaging and video conferencing allow users to communication instantaneously with others across the world a concept which may have seemed ludicrous before the advent of the computer.
New industries and creation of job opportunities. Much as ICT has provided a boost to the existing such as manufacturing and shipping, heavy adoption of ICT has spawned new industries all of its own. Programmers, systems analysts and Web designers all own their jobs to ICT.
It simplification of work. The advancement in the increasing use of ICT has led to easier and quicker performance of work, storing and keeping of records for a long period of time, typing and calculations of figures. Previously in schools at levels teachers would write examinations on black boards which is tedious and takes a lot of time.
The advancement in the increasing use of ICT its has led to introduction of new teaching Aids, such as the use of projectors for illustrations during conferences, seminars, workshops and in others schools and churches in towns and cities.
In addition to the above, it has also led to the introduction of online training and learning. Some University in the Western world have designed online training on computer hard and soft ware repairer ,offer scholarship for master degree online and many more. This has led to imprudent of knowledge and easy accessibility of these Universities abroad by the local people.
It has brought about new innovations such as radio in the bucket which uses smart phone and is less expensive for the community to access and use it. For example Rootio Community Radio Patongo, Rootio community radio Aber, Rootio Community Radio Papor and Rootio Community Radio Kitgum.
Peace talk, carrier counseling and guidance, cultural and educational programs on TVs and radios sensitize people on how to handle the day to day life and how to settle disputes in the community. It also entertains people as they watching football, movies, TV programs, listening to the radios and so on avoiding idleness and disorder hence promoting peace.
We can use the Internet to add value, manage our classroom or improve the planning. We want to teach using the Internet because we want to change, improve, add a new dimension to our teaching, or vary the types and increase the quality of activities assigned to students. In learning, the students need some motivation. Allow them to use the Internet in their learning is a motivational push to who are bored by the traditional ways of information delivery, and thereby expedite the transfer of information from the short-term memory to the long-term memory. The Internet allows us to motivate some of the lost students in the class, and thereby accelerate the assimilation process.
According to an African proverb, a person who asks questions understands a new language faster. Using the Internet for educational activities provides a different avenue for discovery through questioning, and for critical evaluation of information. It is also important that we answer students’ questions properly and timely. This is why we must constantly retrain according to the needs of the time. For this information age, we must be vexed with the personal and educational uses of the Internet.
Generally, Communication is a way of using knowledge. It is a source for re-enforcement. The Internet promotes fast communication across geographical barriers, and therefore gives students an opportunity to communicate early in life with a broad range of people not imagined possible before. Also using knowledge in different settings give a better understanding of the different shades of meaning of the concepts involved in a giving learning situation.
Besides to manage the class room, you can post class lessons, homework problems, and practice exams on the Net for students to access from home, from the library, or from any place that has access to the Net. Parents can access the Web pages to confirm the homework problems their children are required to do. Moreover, the homework could be structured in such a way that the student can progress from simpler to more challenging activities by means of hyperlinks. In addition to posting class lessons and homework, we can have a class bulletin board on web site. In this way, students can get involved in class discussions in a manner not possible in the classroom. This medium can also be used to resolve problems between class periods.
In conclusion, the Internet allows you to add content to your lessons and to disseminate useful information to students and parents without waste of valuable class time and those give many advantages for students in learning.
ICT also promotes flexibility supports collaborative learning among students who can therefore participate at times and places of their choosing. Hilts (1994 : 10) states that : Students may participate at any time of the day or night that they have the time and the inclination. Opportunities for feedback from the instructor and interaction with other students are not limited to a few fixed times per week.
However, the advancement and the increasing use of ICT have led to the following challenges;
It has led to increased level of immorality among the youths and the young ones. Posting of nutty and dirty pictures, blue movies on the internet, persuasive advertisement on the radios and TVs has misled the youth and the young ones to involve themselves in bad acts like involvement in early sex making them expose and venerable to catching of HIV/AIDS and other STDs.
Body language. Communication through vice chat or instant messaging does not take in to account of the body langue. Non-verbal cues are a vital part of the human way of communication. This has in turn led to increased level of theft all over the world. The cone men have taken the advantage to still money through phone calls, face book chat, Eskimi chat and other social media. Since they are not seen and hard to watch their body reactions.
Much as the advancement in the use of ICT is play a bigger role in the community or the globe, most of its programs are designed in the foreign language. Therefore, this only caters for the learned people leaving out the illiterates.
The increasing use of the ICT has also led to high level of unemployment in many countries and societies. People have lost their jobs due to computers introduction, for example in banks , post offices, in school and many business place just to mention but a few. The introduction of ICT has led to replacement of much human power in to mechanical power rendering many people jobless.
Highly use of ICT has led to detoration of the local culture. In many African local communities including my own, people are moving away from African way of dressing, African traditional music, for example during the funeral rites our ancestor would sing funeral rites songs accompanied by African musical instruments like drums, calabashes, jingles and so on. The advancement of ICT has led to the transformation from this to Public Address System.
Continuous use of the computer, smart phones, watching screens, being subjected to strong radio light of the TV camera lights and so on may lead to health problem to an individual i.e. eye defect and cancer due to the strong radio waves that they are subjected to.
The increasing use of ICT has played a great roll in the community as listed above though to some extend it has also some negative effects as also explained above.
